The short answer to that: it is a homemade (as opposed to pre-packaged) content management site. I keep weather, favorite articles
(archived), webcams, theological papers, and other things here.
Here's the long story though. Westerfunk.net was started back in 2001 when I first started getting into networking, web server technology and web site
design (although I'm still quite the novice in the design area). Check out the progression
of the site at the bottom of the page. At first I just
wanted to have a consolidated place to put weather, webcams from around the
world, various links to good sites, and some other stuff, all of which I wanted to share with
others. Then, once I started delving deeper into the ways of web server
technology, and it became a place where I started testing and experimenting with new web server technologies, as well
as a place to learn coding (particularly front-end code and back-end PHP code).
So what is Westerfunk.net now? Well, mainly it's just a content management
system that I created myself (with no back-end package) to have a place where I
could start storing all kinds of stuff like articles, sermons, theological
papers, etc, that wind up
disappearing off of the internet. In addition, it is a place where I still have
some of the original content I started out with such as webcams and weather, which I have
expanded upon over time. Very basically, it is a centralized place where I can
share all kinds of information with people.
So what is some of the best content? Well, naturally, it is going to be the
blog (which pulls content from DavidWesterfield.net) and the latest links (also
on DavidWesterfield.net) to sites I've found interesting, of course. The blog
and links are pulled from the RSS feed for each and I then display them on their
respective page.
The weather section has been expanded upon
significantly. I have added an interactive radar provided by NBC5i.com and MyWeather.com. Also, using the free program Weather Watcher, I have enabled my site to
have live updated National Weather Service Alerts for North Texas which
appear up at the top of every page when there is severe weather in the area. One
of the other more popular features is the giant radar provided by Energy.net.
People really seem to love that.
The web archives section also seems to be very
popular as well. Anything I find interesting that I know I'll want to read again
in the future (or want other people to read) I have started archiving in this
section. The only reason I do this is because content disappears so quickly on
the internet now and there is sometimes no way to find it again. It's
unfortunate. But that's why I setup the web archives section. There's nothing
really fancy about it, I just save a web page and dump it in one of the
categories.
The information technology section contains several tools I've setup for
searching open source information on the internet. Two really cool tools are the
WHOIS and DIG functions. Using WHOIS you can obtain domain name owner
information (depending on if they are giving you accurate information :) So
check that out. Also DIG is used to obtain DNS information for domain names.
This is a little more technical, but still very fascinating. It makes it
possible to search DNS records for a site basically. I have also included a
reverse phone number lookup link, area code listing, and zip code finder.
A while back, I setup a login system for this site where I can protect content and
make it available only to members. If you want access to this content, just
email me and ask for a password. It's that simple. I'll create you an account
and you can browse around. No, I'm not telling you what all I have protected,
that's what membership is for.
So where am I going with this from here? I don't know, I'll keep using it as a play ground to keep
learning new things and adding new features over time. Just stay tuned ...
